Creating your own map blog using CartoDB and Wordpress.
For the first assignment, you are asked to build on the tutorial in class Sept 4, and consolidate your skills by doing a more independent assignment. The idea is to generate a thematic map using CartoDB and publish a blog using Wordpress -- but you get to choose the data and the story you want to tell about it, and how to present it.
Here is an additional CartoDB tutorial you may find helpful, showing how to generate a thematic, or choroplethic, map:
The tutorial shows how to load a shapefile into CartoDB and generate a thematic map, in this case, of electoral results in New Hampshire.
The task for this assignment is to go find your own shapefile, create an interactive thematic map that is interesting to you, and to write a short blog post about it. Mention your data sources, but consider it a bit of freelance journalism with interactive mapping on the web as a visual aid.
If you completely get stuck getting your own data, you can use the San Francisco data or the California census tract data we explored in class on Tuesday - but for full credit on this, get your own data and take your time to generate a presentation that is attractive and informative.
