Please respond to each of the following questions (approximately 250 words each). Please choose one question to answer at greater length (approximately 500 words). Answers should be thoughtful and demonstrate serious reflection on course readings and class discussion. Each short answer will be worth 10 points; the long answer will be worth 20 points.
1. How does the discussion of fate in Desdunes' "The Free Creoles of Color and the Campaign of 1814-1815 -- Hippolyte Castra" relate to the role fate plays in Castra's poem? What is fate, for Castra? Why is fate of primary importance for Desdunes?
2. Compare George from Séjour's "The Mulatto" with Bras-Coupé from Cable's The Grandissimes: to what extent do these two characters speak to the same theme of the slave taking revenge on his master, and how do they inflect that theme differently?
3. The women in the texts we have read in this module are made vulnerable, again and again, by their own racial heritage and by the way the racial heritage of the men around them is projected onto on them. How do race and gender combine to create unique political and social status for these women? What kinds of escape and/or agency do women find for themselves? Address at least two examples (one of them should be Désirée).
