Leverage Adobe Acrobat's Make Accessible Feature

Open this Accessibility Quick Start Guide Download Accessibility Quick Start Guide, which was run through the Make Accessible feature of Adobe Acrobat.

Create a more accessible document after you've run the Make Accessible Wizard in Adobe Acrobat by adding headings to your document.  Headings add semantic markup to a document so a screen reader user can more easily navigate the content.  

The steps for using the Make Accessible Wizard are listed below and showcased in the following video:

  1. To start, select "Tools" from the home menu.
    Select Tools from the top menu options
  2. Locate "Accessibility" and select "Add."  This places the Accessibility option in the right sidebar.

    Locate Accessibility and select Add.  This places the Accessibility Tool in the left sidebar
  3. Select "Accessibility" from the right sidebar.

    Select Accessibility from the left sidebar
  4. Select Reading Order from the right sidebar.  This displays the Reading Order pane.  Drag it to the right side of the screen.

  5. Select the "P" in the first heading, "Accessibility Quick Start Guide," then select "Heading 1" from the Reading Order pane.

    Select the P from the first visual heading and then select Heading 1 from the Reading Order pane
  6. Select the "P" in the second level heading, "Headings," then select "Heading 2" from the Reading Order pane.

    Locate the P from the second heading level then select H2 from the Reading Order pane
  7. Select the "P" in the third level heading, "Overview," then select "Heading 3" from the Reading Order pane.

    Select the P in the third level heading, "Overview," then select Heading 3 from the Reading Order pane.
  8. Review the rest of the document and add the subsequent heading levels using the same processes described above.
