We've now explored two themes at the intersection of technology and society: the "genderization" and underrepresentation of women in tech, and the attention economy.
For each of these two themes, have a group discussion and produce a short statement (half a page is fine, in bullet-point form; no more than a page) with some concise, distilled thoughts on how the in-class discussions and documentary viewing inform the following:
- How might this knowledge change the choices you make in your career? What tradeoffs might you need to consider that you hadn’t before — about where you would or wouldn’t work, about whether you’d push back against ethical breaches, about whether you’d be a whistleblower?
- Are there actions that you, personally, plan to take (and/or persuade other colleagues/friends to take) in light of this knowledge?
When possible, try to make specific suggestions and/or point to specific examples from either class discussions or the documentaries, rather than making general statements.
I plan to give (temporary) access to your submissions to Sara Wachter-Boettcher in advance of her visit next week so that we can use some of these as discussion themes. For that reason, please make sure you turn this in on time by Friday morning as the deadline indicates.
You've already rated students with this rubric. Any major changes could affect their assessment results.
