This Week's Guiding Questions

How is learning social, and what is the role of the Zone of Proximal Development in the learning process? What role can/do tools play in learning and development?
How can we go beyond traditional notions of literacy to imagine literacy as being critical and multimodal? In what ways does multimodality support social learning and notions of the ZPD?

Inspire | Due Tuesday Evening

Add an asset and comment on your peers' assets.
Think back to a powerful learning event in your life (e.g., a time that you remember when you learned something, when you felt successful, etc.). Upload an asset that represents this learning event. In your description, be sure to answer the following questions: (1) What was being learned/taught? (2) Who was learning and who was teaching? (3) What other objects/tools in the environment allowed successful teaching/learning? Upload your asset using #learning.

  - How can tools like the Impact Studio help facilitate the kind of "social learning" that Vygotsky writes about?
  - Post the whiteboard in the Asset Library with hashtag #sociallearning

Reflect | Due Sunday Evening

Read the Multimodal Literacy Autobiography Assignment description. Look at these literacy autobiography examples from previous ED140 students that represent a variety of modes.
Add the Creative Student Discovery Hub as a bCourse site. Download and review the tools that you have at your disposal.
Add an asset to the asset library and browse your peers for inspiration.
Begin to brainstorm for your own literacy autobiography in a slide/board or google doc: Briefly describe a story from your life that represents your becoming literate in some mode of communication (it doesn't have to be learning how to read and write, but becoming literate in some secondary discourse). Think about and describe the modalities that are best suited to represent your story and the emotions/atmosphere associated with your story. Explain your reasons for choosing this modality; explore the affordances of the modality you choose in terms of the colors, texts, images, sounds, etc. and discuss and how these enable you to communicate your literacy practices/events. Upload your brainstorming efforts to the asset library using #multimodalitiesLA
