Instructor guide: Teaching confused students

Teaching confused students Links to an external site.

This exercise should take about 15 minutes of group time plus another 5-10 minutes to debrief.

  • [2 min] For the class you are teaching, pick an upcoming topic that you can explain in 5 minutes or less. For tables with mixed classes, you'll have to play it by ear; either people can pair off right away, or groups can combine if they all know about a given topic
  • [3 min] Each table will first split in half, "students" and "teachers", and brainstorm among themselves of how to be a (confused) student or teacher respectively
  • [5 min] Then everyone will pair up (1 teacher - 1 student), teacher tries to explain the concept, student tries to be confused
  • [3 min] Record what worked well and what didn't, in terms of working with the student
  • Then we'll go over the recurring themes, etc. together as usual.
