FAQ
Note: in this discussion "EE/CS" includes EECS and L&S CS students.
- May non-EE/CS students enroll? Yes, if they meet the other criteria, though EE/CS students will have strict priority if there is excess demand. Enrollment will be very limited to make the course more like a design studio.
- May students develop assessments for non-EE/CS courses? Strict priority will be for EE/CS courses.
- May students sign up in pairs/teams? Yes, we encourage that!
- May student projects develop assessments for use in some non-PrairieLearn system (Canvas, Examtool, etc.?) No, because the idea is to specifically find synergies with an ongoing research project.
- May students watch recorded lectures later, rather than attending lecture synchronously? No. Some lectures/meetings may be recorded for reference, but interaction is the whole point. If you are not able to systematically attend synchronously, please do not enroll. We want a vigorous, collaborative atmosphere.
- What happens to the final project report? We hope that some of them will be high quality enough to submit for publication, with the student team member(s) as the lead authors.
- What happens to the assessment artifacts we create? It is in the spirit of the course, and of a great public university, to seek to disseminate our knowledge and results as widely as possible for a large and positive impact. We therefore hope, but cannot legally require, that you make your software available to interested instructors under a BSD or MIT or similar open-source royalty-free license. We can help ensure it gets widely seen and used, if you wish, resulting in credit and fame to your team.
- How does team project grading work? The entire team will receive the same grade for the project. The only exception is if someone actually withdraws from the class and thereby leaves their team in the lurch. Incompletes will not be given except for unforeseen emergent circumstances, as is campus policy. Anyone who wishes to late-withdraw will have our support when they petition the powers that be. We expect that if project teams are making a good faith effort to work on the project, grades will be high.
