Software

We will primarily (though not exclusively) be using ESRI ArcGIS 10.2 / 10.3 for this course in 2015. We have free Student Edition ArcGIS DVDs available on campus. These are full versions of ArcGIS with the primary limitation being that they're 1 year licenses.

7-Zip. Many datasets arrive in Zip archives and while all OSes extract Zip files you're encouraged to get the free, open source 7zip software (7ZIP.ORG) to manage Zip files.

Non-Windows users: . Unfortunately ArcGIS is Windows-only software. It is possible to run a virtual copy of Windows on a Mac or Linux machine using software like VirtualBox (free) or consider using free, opensource QGIS instead.

2017 update: Virtualized desktops are increasingly making it simple to run this software in a window on local Mac, Linux, or Windows machine. Berkeley users you may have access to this software using your CalnetID at citrix.berkeley.edu.
