Overview

CS194-200 is a new course on how to engage in research or outreach projects in teams. Its part of the campus' Discovery Initiative. From the campus' Initiative site, the Discovery arc comprises 3 phases: In the Connect phase, students are introduced to a Discovery vision of higher education, which fosters a sense of belonging and a culture of personal agency. In the Immerse phase, students are exposed to Discovery throughout the curriculum through engaged and inquiry-driven learning. In the Culminate phase, students apply and express their knowledge and passion through a personalized Discovery experience, whether through original research, artistic production, entrepreneurial initiatives, or community-engaged service.

This course fits in the Connect/Immersion phases. It aims to help students form a team, develop their team and organizational skills, explore the literature around a chosen theme, and plan a pilot project. Students in this class may be paired with a grad student mentor (depends on enrollment) from a complementary course CS294-210. The idea is to prepare the student team to initiate a longer-term project after the course completes (Culminate phase).

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for the course. The idea is to prepare the team for a non-trivial research or outreach project, which could occupy all of senior year. So ideally you would take the course in junior year or earlier.

There is no textbook for the course. Online readings will be available before each class.

Conduct

Please take time to view the UC Berkeley Student Code of Conduct and the UC Berkeley Honor Code. This course will include a lot of project-specific assignments and most forms of collaboration are acceptable. We do expect you to fairly keep track of the effort and contributions of each team member though.
