Your grandfather just left you his collection of a few hundred record albums but when they were packed in boxes and shipped to you his organizing system was scrambled so you need to organize them.
The collection is broad in its musical selection – rock music, folk music, country music, classical music, movie soundtracks, and all sorts of other genres you don’t immediately recognize.
There seems to be a complete collection of all the albums by “The Beatles” and also many albums separately recorded by band members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison after “The Beatles” broke up. There are also some curious albums in which country music artists have recorded “cover versions” of songs by The Beatles.
Your grandfather liked Beethoven’s symphonies a great deal, and had six different recordings of the famous 9th symphony by different orchestras. You notice a few other sets of albums where the same musical work was recorded by different musicians.
Your assignment is to explain your organizing system in terms of three sets of design questions:
1. What is being organized? What are the resources in your organizing system?
2. Why is it being organized? What specific interactions with these resources are you supporting, and for whom?
3. How is it being organized? What properties of the resources are you relying on to enable you to apply organizing principles to the resources?
Put yourself in the role of the DESIGNER of the organizing system who is writing instructions for another person who is the IMPLEMENTER of the organizing system. Answer the questions in three separate numbered paragraphs (1.1, 1.2, and 1.3) so that the IMPLEMENTER can easily follow them (and we can easily review them). Be as specific as you need to ensure that organizing principles or rules can be followed to create the organizing system that you have designed. Make sure your system can sensibly deal with the details about The Beatles and Beethoven.
