Lab I - Introduction to ArcGIS
- Due Feb 3, 2015 by 9am
- Points 5
- Submitting a text entry box, a website url, or a file upload
UCSB Geography continues to offer one of the best quick overviews of the components of ArcGIS that concludes with producing a map in Arcmap. While this isn't archaeology-specific it does a good job getting everyone oriented to the software. UCSB is my alma mater and they gave me permission to use their lab in this class.

- The beginning of the lab concerns printing and computer use in another dept's computer lab. These are not relevant to our class, so skip the beginning of 3.0 Getting Started (the blue box with "Logging In" and "File Management") and start with the "Copying Data", portion. Also ignore the USB Flash Drive requirement. We'll use Berkeley Box instead.
- There are questions in orange boxes on the tutorial. Please consider the questions but you do not have to answer the questions in your lab.
- The assignment involves two maps, described in green box at the bottom of the webpage. They request JPG or BMP files but please submit a 300 dpi PDF file instead.
Pay special attention to cartographic quality and make an effort to produce visually balanced maps as described in our Dent 1998 reading Links to an external site.. Please complete the accompanying lab by the beginning of class on Tuesday February 3rd.
